Thoughts on Kaze Tachinu

I just saw the latest animation film by Hayao Miyazaki. This film is very anticipated movie for all Ghibli fans. Kaze Tachinu (Wind Rises) is dramatized biography of Jiro Horikoshi, designer of Zero fighter plane for WWII. I haven’t yet read the manga which this movie is based on.

The movie begins with a dream-like sequence from the main character’s childhood. He sleeps, dreaming of flying. In his dream he climbs on roof of his house on which there is a fantasy airplane waiting. He takes off enjoying the breeze, but suddenly finds huge bomber ready to deliver it’s payload, sinister dark creatures on huge black bombs. The boy’s glasses are torn away by the wind, and the boy falls, then wakes up.

In overall Kaze Tachinu is a great movie; this is genuine Ghibli production. Hand drawn old-fashioned animation is great and is occasionally complemented by CG-aided sequences. As you might expect, level of detail is amazing.

I love the way how CG techniques were used only to aid the main storyline, they were never too obvious to steal the attention. This is exactly how it should be done.

The overall style of the film is so elegant and true to the era it depicts, furniture and houses for example looks so real; significant effort must have been done to research and ensure the authenticity of the environments.

The movie doesn’t really show war but wartime is just a context or environment for this film. It would be wrong to call this romantic movie although the story contains tear-jerking romance. It feels appropriate, warm and human.

It would be easy to imagine that Miyazaki wanted to make more stronger anti-war movie but couldn’t because of pressure from sponsors. So he might have had to choose more subtle method; reference to the horror of war via metaphors such as natural disaster, injury or death of a loved one. Even though this is huge Ghibli production, Kaze Tachinu Has received a little attention in mass media. It just seems that in present day Japan, war or recent history isn’t very popular topic. Some TV channels seem to have even decided not to mention the movie at all.

It is curious that Miyazaki chose this topic, in this very moment in Japan. The Liberal Democratic Party had landslide victory in the two last elections, and the party has been very open about it’s intentions of changing the pacifist article in Japanese constitution and arming Japan with military and possibly nuclear weapons. Anti-war theme couldn’t be more unpopular.

But then, it might be the reason why Miyazaki decided to make this film.

I did notice that some of the scenes were cut, probably by some other factor than Ghibli or Miyazaki, maybe sponsor forced edits. If there is ever going to be director’s cut, it will be a must-see!

I really recommend this film. Bravo, Miyazaki Hayao!

Introducing: Document Jinmo

This is introduction to the documentary movie I’m shooting now (It’s in Japanese, will make subtitles soon)
http://vimeo.com/71012218

I have searched my whole life for opportunity to make documentary movie like this. I am very fortunate to be able to document something what is so close to my heart. It’s exciting new journey for me and I will grow by this experience.

It might be that I use all my passion for making documentary for this movie. If that’s so, I don’t particularly mind, I might just become professional chef of Japanese fried chicken (kara-age)!

Life is exciting! Life is fun!

Fuck dreams! Let’s LOVE MAKING (MAKING LOVE) REALITY!
Fuck memories! Let’s LOVE MAKING (MAKING LOVE) FUTURE!

It’s a real miracle to be alive, don’t you think so?

Fourth Interview

Today it was fourth time to shoot Document: Jinmo. I am continuously surprised, even dumbfounded by him and his wife. Everyday is a big surprise for me..

It would be easy to picture image of tormented, difficult to understand avant-garde artist who is suffering to create. But in front of my eyes, I find a very peaceful person who lives by his words, constantly creating new art, with his lovely wife by his side. I see no torment at all. I see balance and happiness in everything. And lots of love.

He has just released his 152nd album Mayakovsky which is dedicated for Russian poet Vladimir Mayakovsky. Quoting Mayakovsky’s poem:

Night wraps the sky in tribute from the stars.
In hours like these, one rises to address
The ages, history, and all creation.

I can imagine Mr.Jinmo picking his Jinmoid working on his new music in early morning hours, feeling vibration of ages and creation, maybe feeling these very words. Maybe Jinmo’s wife is by his side, making her delicious coffee, meditating in Jinmo’s tune, or perhaps she is sleeping.  When listening any of Jinmo’s albums, I feel kind of familiar connection to the world, much like I did when I first listened Brian Eno’s Music for Airports.

Jinmo’s music is kind of celestial and cerebral, both at the same time. Cerebral in it’s artistic context, celestial in pure expression. It’s visual music but also much more.

After having delicious lunch made by his wife we headed to cafe Paulista in Ginza. It is a very special place with coffee like nectar from heaven.. I was able to shoot really beautiful sequence and interview this afternoon. In fact, best I’ve shot so far for Document: Jinmo.

I realize I must keep searching for various places with many different colors in order to capture Jinmo visually. I can’t be sure if any amount of places is going to be enough, but we will shoot in Finland and Germany too and in various places in Japan and go from there. If you by any chance are interested in sponsoring this movie, please let us know.

There are still many more recordings to come. But I will have my camera charged, locked and loaded. I will be ready.

In Jinmo’s own words:

Fuck the dream. Fuck the memory. Love THIS REALITY. Fuck the future. Fuck the past. Live THIS MOMENT.

Kawase Naomi

I really respect and love works of Japanese director Kawase Naomi. I saw her works in beginning of 2000 in Helsinki Ateneum. I was stunned to hear about her adoption (she was adopted when she was two, just like me). It could be because of this reason that I am so moved about her work.
My personal favorite is Mogari no Mori (Mourning Forest 2007) but I also love her earlier work Katatsumori and Embracing. She is fearless and honest documentarist.

Lizard Point Vol.1 Shooting

I had great time shooting Lizard Point Vol.1 in Jogashima, Miura today. I really want to thank fantastic model Yuki and our videographer Paulo for making this possible. Without you guys this just wouldn’t have happened!

It was really such a pleasure to work with Yuki since she really understood my concept from the beginning. The way how she interpreted it was totally beautiful; in fact I felt even a bit shaken by the intensity of the emotions she was able to convey.

Indeed, I wish that my skill as a photographer was enough to capture this very powerful scene properly. I know I will have trouble sleeping until I see the developed negatives; But that’s how it always is when you are shooting film. You’re taking risk; and that’s what makes it so thrilling; that’s chemical reaction what’s going on there.

My Kind of Image

You know the word  “utsukushii” 美しい , in Japanese. The word is composed of Chinese letter that has a component of sheep.

I love this word. It’s as lovely and big as music of Vangelis, it’s innocent and pure like a white sheep lying down on green meadow. It is a word I want to use to describe women, the wonderful creatures who live on this planet despite it’s horrors.

I have always believed in feminine aspect of humans, even men are kind of women, you know, kind of like ocean. Like Björk would sing in her song Mutual Core, perhaps the planet itself is feminine, trying to manage the tectonic plates to counteract distance..

Our beautiful, beautiful, feminine planet..

Yes, I think Japan needs more mature imagery of femininity; and I predict that advertising machine in Japan is going to change to reflect the need. I think I’m speaking for everyone if I say; we are crying and dying for something more spiritual. The need is there and it’s huge.

I would like to be there when the change happens.

We Heard Music

I had pleasure to shoot formal profile photo if baritone Inoue san in Shinjuku park. This one turned out to be the best.

Misao the Big Mama and Fukumaru the Cat

Yesterday, I found Miyoko Ihara’s photo book “Misao the Big Mama and Fukumaru the Cat”. The photos are unique and heartwarming; I can feel the photographer’s intention clearly; the human connection between the cat and grandma.

In her website she says:

“My grandmother and her cat are always together. This is the photobook captured the everyday life of my grandmother, Misa who bends her self to the fields work with her cat Fukumaru.”

What especially delighted me about this book is what I call a kind of artistic honesty; Ihara doesn’t try to be artistic, the photos are simple captures of real life events, but are exactly that in creative and artistic way. Ihara’s framing and selection of subject feels very profound and honest; it must be the result of her years in Nippon Photography Institute that took her to this level.

Although I understand why some of the photos might be criticized as being a kind of cute, the meaning behind the photos is clear; they are honest description of human connection. Fukumaru is very unique, odd-eyed cat and his partner and the 87 years old grandmother whose eyes show experience of life are naturally suited to each other.

The life of this couple is well captured in their green, lush environment.

It’s remarkable what the photos show if you take a moment to really look at them. Sure they are cute photos, but they are also much more. It is unclear to me at this point whether the photos were taken digitally or with film camera, but in any case, the print is excellent with very rich and saturated colors.

Especially I was moved about the second last photo, a rainbow captured in a very beautiful way.

I highly recommend this photo book to anyone interested in photography.

The bird asks the frog,

what do you know about flying,

about the way how wind can hurt?

This is for the toad that we remember,

when our webbed feet bleed

for the person who locked his door

with his empty words in North Point

For the hope that exists in the world of no hope,

I say no more

until my son meets his frog
