Thoughts on Kaze Tachinu

I just saw the latest animation film by Hayao Miyazaki. This film is very anticipated movie for all Ghibli fans. Kaze Tachinu (Wind Rises) is dramatized biography of Jiro Horikoshi, designer of Zero fighter plane for WWII. I haven’t yet read the manga which this movie is based on.

The movie begins with a dream-like sequence from the main character’s childhood. He sleeps, dreaming of flying. In his dream he climbs on roof of his house on which there is a fantasy airplane waiting. He takes off enjoying the breeze, but suddenly finds huge bomber ready to deliver it’s payload, sinister dark creatures on huge black bombs. The boy’s glasses are torn away by the wind, and the boy falls, then wakes up.

In overall Kaze Tachinu is a great movie; this is genuine Ghibli production. Hand drawn old-fashioned animation is great and is occasionally complemented by CG-aided sequences. As you might expect, level of detail is amazing.

I love the way how CG techniques were used only to aid the main storyline, they were never too obvious to steal the attention. This is exactly how it should be done.

The overall style of the film is so elegant and true to the era it depicts, furniture and houses for example looks so real; significant effort must have been done to research and ensure the authenticity of the environments.

The movie doesn’t really show war but wartime is just a context or environment for this film. It would be wrong to call this romantic movie although the story contains tear-jerking romance. It feels appropriate, warm and human.

It would be easy to imagine that Miyazaki wanted to make more stronger anti-war movie but couldn’t because of pressure from sponsors. So he might have had to choose more subtle method; reference to the horror of war via metaphors such as natural disaster, injury or death of a loved one. Even though this is huge Ghibli production, Kaze Tachinu Has received a little attention in mass media. It just seems that in present day Japan, war or recent history isn’t very popular topic. Some TV channels seem to have even decided not to mention the movie at all.

It is curious that Miyazaki chose this topic, in this very moment in Japan. The Liberal Democratic Party had landslide victory in the two last elections, and the party has been very open about it’s intentions of changing the pacifist article in Japanese constitution and arming Japan with military and possibly nuclear weapons. Anti-war theme couldn’t be more unpopular.

But then, it might be the reason why Miyazaki decided to make this film.

I did notice that some of the scenes were cut, probably by some other factor than Ghibli or Miyazaki, maybe sponsor forced edits. If there is ever going to be director’s cut, it will be a must-see!

I really recommend this film. Bravo, Miyazaki Hayao!

New Tsunami Video

It’s pretty shocking.

http://www.redflagnews.com/headlines/shocking-new-japan-tsunami-video-found-released

As far as I know this video seem real and taken by low-end camcorder. It’s first time to see the 3/11 tsunami in Japan from such close-hand human perspective. It’s like war.

What surprised me most however was the mood and colour of the sky. It seems so real. I remember how that day felt. I was here in Yokohama in safe distance from tsunami, but the tremors were felt strong here too, and all cellphone networks were down. It took twelve hours to get in reach with my wife.

Anyhow, people should see this since it’s reality.

Fourth Interview

Today it was fourth time to shoot Document: Jinmo. I am continuously surprised, even dumbfounded by him and his wife. Everyday is a big surprise for me..

It would be easy to picture image of tormented, difficult to understand avant-garde artist who is suffering to create. But in front of my eyes, I find a very peaceful person who lives by his words, constantly creating new art, with his lovely wife by his side. I see no torment at all. I see balance and happiness in everything. And lots of love.

He has just released his 152nd album Mayakovsky which is dedicated for Russian poet Vladimir Mayakovsky. Quoting Mayakovsky’s poem:

Night wraps the sky in tribute from the stars.
In hours like these, one rises to address
The ages, history, and all creation.

I can imagine Mr.Jinmo picking his Jinmoid working on his new music in early morning hours, feeling vibration of ages and creation, maybe feeling these very words. Maybe Jinmo’s wife is by his side, making her delicious coffee, meditating in Jinmo’s tune, or perhaps she is sleeping.  When listening any of Jinmo’s albums, I feel kind of familiar connection to the world, much like I did when I first listened Brian Eno’s Music for Airports.

Jinmo’s music is kind of celestial and cerebral, both at the same time. Cerebral in it’s artistic context, celestial in pure expression. It’s visual music but also much more.

After having delicious lunch made by his wife we headed to cafe Paulista in Ginza. It is a very special place with coffee like nectar from heaven.. I was able to shoot really beautiful sequence and interview this afternoon. In fact, best I’ve shot so far for Document: Jinmo.

I realize I must keep searching for various places with many different colors in order to capture Jinmo visually. I can’t be sure if any amount of places is going to be enough, but we will shoot in Finland and Germany too and in various places in Japan and go from there. If you by any chance are interested in sponsoring this movie, please let us know.

There are still many more recordings to come. But I will have my camera charged, locked and loaded. I will be ready.

In Jinmo’s own words:

Fuck the dream. Fuck the memory. Love THIS REALITY. Fuck the future. Fuck the past. Live THIS MOMENT.

State of Flickr App in Japan

Now that the new Flickr refresh is out, you’d wonder if Flickr is going to do anything about the Flickr iOS App availability in Japan.

Those adds to the app “Wherevr” that appear when browsing with iOS devices are so annoying since they take you nowhere, you get alert which reports that the item is not available in the Japanese store. Not quite wherevr.

Flickr got Refresh

Wow, so Flickr got refresh. It’s funny since I was just thinking about it.

I generally like the update from the visual sense; especially the default way of viewing photo streams. It just looks much better now that images are arranged into a kind of nice, beautiful layout.  The Terabyte thing doesn’t really matter to me since I don’t think I’ll ever upload that many photos and I have pro account anyway which doesn’t have the upload limit.

Overall, I’m really glad about the refresh and the cover photo is nice little touch. See my flickr here.

Lizard Point Vol.1 Shooting

I had great time shooting Lizard Point Vol.1 in Jogashima, Miura today. I really want to thank fantastic model Yuki and our videographer Paulo for making this possible. Without you guys this just wouldn’t have happened!

It was really such a pleasure to work with Yuki since she really understood my concept from the beginning. The way how she interpreted it was totally beautiful; in fact I felt even a bit shaken by the intensity of the emotions she was able to convey.

Indeed, I wish that my skill as a photographer was enough to capture this very powerful scene properly. I know I will have trouble sleeping until I see the developed negatives; But that’s how it always is when you are shooting film. You’re taking risk; and that’s what makes it so thrilling; that’s chemical reaction what’s going on there.
