My Silent Road Exhibition

I will exhibit my photo series “My Silent Road” sometimes soon in a very special place in Yokohama. I realized I have started to think think of Yokohama naturally as my hometown. Finland feels like a chapter which I have already read and there’s no reason to return to it. There are so many lovely people near me here. I really was like a walking corpse once, but now I feel healthy and alive again. Love Songs might be for my mother. But this is for you.

Printing Lizard Point

I had great time making first prints for Lizard Point photos in Dark Room Intl. in Yokohama. I was really glad to get advice and guidance from the kind people there.

I really love the look of real silver-halide prints. They look substantial and delightfully analogue. Since I was after the high contrast, I felt I really chose the right medium this time by choosing film versus digital.

Here Sometimes, Tomorrow

My photo exhibition Here Sometimes will start from tomorrow. It has been quite a journey to get here. I really want to say thanks for everyone who was involved in making the photos.

Especially I want to say thanks to Saeko Nakahara, the beautiful model in the photo “Adoption”  which is now in the front page, Maya Sinji Jung, my sister and big teacher in Jeju, and Turo Halinen who took the top photo in this post.

I also want to say thanks for my wife for allowing me to do what I want.

We have opening party at 6.00PM in the gallery tomorrow. I hope you can make it before the wine disappears.

Here Sometimes in Art Mania Gallery 23.-29. July.

Documentary of Pin Pin Co

I had great time shooting a documentary of Pin Pin Co yesterday. She is doing a project “More than the Face” in BankART NYK in Yokohama. I was really moved about her artistic style and execution.

My documentary will be finished in next weeks. On the mean while, you can learn more from Pin Pin Co at her website: http://pinpinco.com

Yokohama

I remember when I first came to Minato Mirai in Yokohama, about exactly ten years ago. For me that time, it was futuristic city, like you know, city from Blade Runner, but it had something that I felt Tokyo lacked.

Fresh air, upward space, or something like that.

I was really moved that time about the beauty of the Queen’s towers and sure the Landmark Tower, you know I really liked how you could see the sea and the urban landscape at the same time. It was something I had never experienced.

Now, ten years after, as I look at the landscape in my mind.. I feel it’s definably the place where I want to be, you know, like I feel I belong there. Most of my friends are there, and with them I feel I am becoming part of the image really quickly and naturally.

I suppose I’ve always liked this type of urban landscape, you know I was born in completely different surroundings, in rural area of Finland and I never knew how sea smells or sounds like. It was only when I came to Japan first time, I started to be fascinated about sea.

I love sea and all empty and dark things, you know, horizontal lines and something tiny among the waves, for me it’s so beautiful, like those things are always there, even though the sea might shift and change constantly.
