The box in my hands

This year I made a special new year’s resolution. I made a promise not to buy a single camera this year. This promise has been a best promise I have ever made. (And I have been able to keep it so far)

I get the sense that photographer is now more than ever, slave of a camera. World is flooded with the digital apparatus that are designed to create desire and make picture taking as simple and easy as possible. There are tons of new advanced features that make getting a technically pristine picture easier.

I remember the original Olympus Pen (film camera) advertisement, “Taking great photographs has never been this easy!”. Now in the era of smartphones the advertisement seems almost silly or ironic.

It is almost as if camera has became a fashion accessory for photographers. Then, I can’t help but feel sad about this situation. Because much potential for interesting conversation (and photo taking!) is being lost.

There is great saying, “Big minds talk ideas, small minds talk people”.
I say; big photographers talk photos, small photographers talk cameras.

Now as I have focused less and less in the photocopying apparatus and more in the photos, I notice my mind is lighter; I just use what I have. And I have more time to think about the mood of the photo, and setting.

In Finnish language, tool is referred as to having “jotain kättä pidempää” (something longer than your hand). This refers to having extended leverage at your disposal. Yes. I have a lever or button in my hands, sort of. And I’m there, you know, with you.

Of course some kind of camera is necessary to take a photo. However, as Araki said, if you have burning desire to write a love letter, it doesn’t matter if it’s pencil or ball point pen.

I don’t have Leica or anything really expensive or special. Just couple of normal cameras. I never keep any cameras what I don’t actively use. I have given some cameras to my friends before.

Then, honestly, these days I don’t particularly enjoy watching cameras or talk about them. No matter how great camera I would get, I wouldn’t be able to take it with me after I die. And we will all die, you know. But the feeling of being in some place and meeting some beautiful people, with my heart beating a little fast.. now that might be forever.

There is excellent article about GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) by Eric Kim. I recommend to read it.

Regarding Japanese Photo Magazines

I really hate how in Japanese photo magazines include camera and lens info to the pictures, often superimposed over the image. Anyone who has a little understanding how cameras work, focal length, aperture and shutter speed can be figured out just by looking at the photo. It is not exactly rocket science..  And chef’s don’t superimpose the manufacturer and type of their pans and kettles to the food, right?

But further more, this habit of including the information to the image just shows the materialistic value of today’s photo book publishing, photography becomes a cheap advertisement for camera makers and the artistic meaning of the picture is tarnished if not destroyed completely.

I was glad that Nippon Camera’s Nude Photo issue does not do this although the publication suffers from censorship and other editorial issues.

Exhibition Schedule Changed

My exhibition schedule has been changed. I’m sorry for the inconvenience. My son caught a cold and he needs my care.

I want to say big thanks for Ehrismann staff for their kindness and understanding.

The exhibition starts this Sunday (7日) and lasts until Thursday (11日).

I am really excited!

My Silent Road Exhibition

I will exhibit my photo series “My Silent Road” sometimes soon in a very special place in Yokohama. I realized I have started to think think of Yokohama naturally as my hometown. Finland feels like a chapter which I have already read and there’s no reason to return to it. There are so many lovely people near me here. I really was like a walking corpse once, but now I feel healthy and alive again. Love Songs might be for my mother. But this is for you.

NYIP Feedback

I am really glad to receive the feedback, particularly on this outdoor shade photo. It seems this portrait of beautiful Kayo made impact for the NYIP instructor. The instructor quoted Pulizer winning photographer,

“When you are taking pictures,  you just don’t want to take pictures what show the situation, you want to take pictures which show how it feels like to be there”

If I can be successful in showing audience the mood of the situation or my connection to the subject, then, taking photographs is the thing I want to do.

My Kind of Image

You know the word  “utsukushii” 美しい , in Japanese. The word is composed of Chinese letter that has a component of sheep.

I love this word. It’s as lovely and big as music of Vangelis, it’s innocent and pure like a white sheep lying down on green meadow. It is a word I want to use to describe women, the wonderful creatures who live on this planet despite it’s horrors.

I have always believed in feminine aspect of humans, even men are kind of women, you know, kind of like ocean. Like Björk would sing in her song Mutual Core, perhaps the planet itself is feminine, trying to manage the tectonic plates to counteract distance..

Our beautiful, beautiful, feminine planet..

Yes, I think Japan needs more mature imagery of femininity; and I predict that advertising machine in Japan is going to change to reflect the need. I think I’m speaking for everyone if I say; we are crying and dying for something more spiritual. The need is there and it’s huge.

I would like to be there when the change happens.

We Heard Music

I had pleasure to shoot formal profile photo if baritone Inoue san in Shinjuku park. This one turned out to be the best.

Making Portfolio

I have been ignoring this important task of any artist for far too long. I resort to Illustrator CS5, guides and Baskerville font. Rest should be easy except that..

How many times I have felt that I need my own art director..

Anyway, being a photographer without up-to-date portfolio is like being a bird with no feathers. So, break a leg, Jaakko!
